Two closely spaced conductors separated by a non-conductive insulating medium constitute a capacitor. When a voltage is applied between the two plates of the capacitor, it stores electric charge. The capacitance of a capacitor is numerically equal to the ratio of the charge on one conductive plate to the voltage between the two plates. The basic unit of capacitance is the farad (F). In circuit diagrams, capacitive components are typically represented by the letter C.

Capacitors play an important role in circuits such as tuning, bypassing, coupling, and filtering. They are used in the tuning circuits of transistor radios, CD players, and recorders, as well as in the coupling and bypass circuits of color televisions.

With the rapid development of electronic information technology, the pace of digital electronic product upgrades is accelerating. Consumer electronics, primarily flat-panel televisions (LCD and PDP), laptops, and digital cameras, continue to grow in production and sales, driving the growth of the capacitor industry.

As one of the main electronic components, capacitors account for approximately 40% of the entire electronic component production. In recent years, with the rapid development of information technology and electronic devices, as well as the transfer of international manufacturing to China, the demand for capacitors has shown an overall upward trend. China's capacitor industry has also rapidly developed into a major producer and exporter of capacitors worldwide.

From 2012 to 2017, the global capacitor market size expanded from $17.3 billion to $20.9 billion, with a CAGR of 3.84%. During this period, China's capacitor market size grew from 72.6 billion yuan to 98.7 billion yuan, with a CAGR of approximately 6.33%, higher than the world average. Currently, the global capacitor industry is dominated by Japan, the United States, and China, with Japan leading the way by monopolizing high-end components and possessing the strongest capabilities in electrolytic capacitors, ceramic capacitors, thin-film capacitors, and other industries.

According to data from the General Administration of Customs, from January to July 2018, China exported 60,616 tons of capacitor products, an increase of 10.7% year-on-year, with an export value of 2,696,733 thousand US dollars, an increase of 27.3% year-on-year. Imports of capacitor products amounted to 48,363 tons, an increase of 13% year-on-year, with an import value of 6,970,046 thousand US dollars, an increase of 64% year-on-year.

The downstream applications of capacitors mainly include: ① military market: used in aviation, aerospace, ships, weapons, electronic warfare, and other military equipment and weapons fields.

; ② Civil Industrial Market: Applied to system communication equipment, industrial control equipment, medical electronic equipment, rail transit, precision instruments, petroleum exploration equipment, automotive electronics, and other civil industrial fields; ③ Civil Consumer Market: Applied to laptops, digital cameras, mobile phones, audio and video recording equipment, and other civil consumer fields.
